Essential Tools and Implements for Every Gardener

Gardening enthusiasts know that protecting plants from pests and diseases is crucial for a successful harvest. Thankfully, there are various tools and implements available for this purpose. In this comprehensive article, we will explore the different types of tools used for fighting plant enemies, including mechanical protectors and insecticide/fungicide applicators, as well as tools for harvesting, pruning, and supporting plants.

Mechanical Protection for Plants

One of the most effective ways to protect plants from external threats is by using covered frames. These frames typically consist of a wooden box, measuring around eighteen inches to two feet square and about eight inches high, covered with glass, protecting cloth, mosquito netting, or mosquito wire. The advantage of using such frames goes beyond just protecting plants from pests and diseases; they also help retain heat and provide insulation against the cold. This makes it possible to start planting earlier than usual, giving an extra early and safe start to vine vegetables like cucumbers and melons.

For newly-set plants such as tomatoes or cabbage, simple yet effective devices like stiff tin, cardboard, or tar paper collars can be used to protect against cutworms. These collars are usually a few inches high and large enough to be placed around the stem, penetrating an inch or so into the soil, forming a barrier against cutworms.

Applying Insecticides and Fungicides

When it comes to applying insecticides and fungicides, having the right tools is essential. A powder gun is a handy tool for applying poison powders in the garden. However, for more versatile use, a hand-power compressed-air sprayer is recommended. These sprayers are used for applying wet sprays and can be equipped with mist-making nozzles, with the non-cloggable automatic type being the most efficient. For larger gardens, a barrel pump mounted on wheels can be a valuable investment. However, for smaller-scale operations, a good hand-syringe may suffice, although it's generally recommended to invest a few extra dollars and get a small tank sprayer, as it provides a continuous stream or spray and holds a larger amount of spraying solution. When choosing a sprayer, opt for one made of brass, as it is more durable and resistant to corrosion from the strong poisons and chemicals used in sprays compared to cheaper metal options.

Harvesting Tools

Apart from the basic tools like a spade, prong-hoe, and spading-fork, there are few specialized harvesting tools commonly used in small gardens, as most of them require long rows and horse-power for efficient use. However, an onion harvester attachment for a double wheel hoe can be useful for loosening onions, beets, turnips, and other root vegetables from the soil or cutting spinach. Another helpful tool for fruit picking in tall trees is the wire-fingered fruit-picker, which can be attached to a long handle. However, with the modern practice of using low-headed trees, this tool may not be necessary.

Pruning Implements

Proper pruning is essential for maintaining healthy plants, and having the right tools makes the task much easier. A good sharp jack-knife and a pair of pruning shears are usually sufficient for most pruning tasks in the garden. However, it's important to start pruning correctly from the beginning to ensure that plants grow in a healthy and manageable manner.

Supporting Devices for Plants

Providing support to plants, such as stakes, trellises, and wires, is often overlooked, but it can greatly improve the convenience of cultivation and the appearance of the garden. Sturdy and well-maintained supporting devices can last for years, so it's important to invest in good-quality tools and take proper care
